We have recently start experimenting with the Ning platform, an engine that allows users to build fast and relatively easy online communities.
In essence you can build your own Facebook application, of course with less features, but still quite powerful.

The social networking site was built in order to support http://designstories.gr a project that went live a couple of months ago with a need to provide our visitors a place where they can interact with each other.
A Canadian version in order to cover the North American market is on its way http://designstories.ca
In the near future we will customize this more, by also using a simple e-commerce solution as Paypal and also will be able to offer this as a solution to our clients.
